Autumn
Sowing
Seed sowing is slowing down now, but it’s not too late to sow some overwintering broad beans.
Harvesting
If you planted maincrop potatoes, carrots, beetroot, cabbage, celariac, parsnips, pumpkins, squash, leeks, kohlrabi, perpetual spinach or swede, they should be ready to harvest this month.
Planting
Time to plant your garlic cloves this month.
Don’t forget, garlic is an allium (onion family), so pay attention to your rotation from previous seasons!
Other jobs!
Stake Brussels Sprouts as the can blow over in heavy winds.
Improve the soil - grow a green manure (see above) or spread compost or well rotted manure onto it and cover with heavy duty plastic which is available from the hut.
Prune fruit bushes: prune any dead, dying or diseased wood and aim for an open goblet shape.
