Autumn 2023 Newsletter

Summer is traditionally the busiest season for plotholders on site, with plently of sowing, watering, weeding and harvesting taking place and we hope you had time to give to your plot and it is running successfully. A lot of the above tasks will indeed run into the Autumn if you have a polytunnel or plan on growning some Winter onions, potatoes or salads. We have had a relatively wet Summer, after the initial heat wave at the start of June, and the cultivators in us will not complain too much about rain.

AGM and BBQ

We seem to be enjoying some late Summer weather towards the end of August being blessed with a warm day for the annual AGM and family day where everyone had a great day being entertained with music from the Men’s Shed and food and socialising with fellow plotholders. We had a fantastic turnout from the Turvey allotment community and the kids had a great day with the flowerpot decoration.

Bee orchid

One of our eagle-eyed plotholders spotted the incedibly rare and native bee orchid in one of the plots at the start of June. The sighting even made the Dublin Gazette and you can get further details of the environment that the bee orchid grows in and its unusual life cycle here and scrolling to Page 5.

Lock the gate

We kindly ask everyone to lock the gate correctly when entering and exiting the allotments even if you are only calling in for a few minutes We must be aware that there may be people loitering around later in the evening when there is nobody present in the allotments and could easily damage polytunnels, greenouses or sheds.
